Southampton, Watford meet for relegation six-pointer

2019/20 Premier League

Round 14

30 November – 1 December 2019

Southampton and Watford will cross swords in a relegation six-pointer at St Mary’s Stadium on Saturday 30 November 2019, kick-off at 17:30. The match is one of 10 across the weekend for the 14th round of the Premier League season.

Southampton come into the match on the back of a fine performance in a 2-2 draw away to Arsenal last weekend, with the Saints somewhat unlucky not to come away with all three points. They led 2-1 through goals from Danny Ings and James Ward-Prowse, but the Gunners’ Alexandre Lacazette struck a last-gasp equaliser.

“It is more important to find back in the way and that we can do it again and this gives us belief,” said Southampton manager Ralph Hasenhuttl. “The message is that this is the only way for us to play and to stay in the league when we play like this.”

Watford, meanwhile, remain bottom of the log after they were thrashed 3-0 at home by Burnley, a chastening result for a team hoping to lift themselves out of trouble.

"We just need time, we need belief, we need fight; all these kind of things," said manager Quique Sanchez Flores. "We can do it together, but it doesn't depend on me, it's not my control. I'm not worried about anything in my life.”

In head-to-head stats, Southampton and Watford have met in 32 previous matches. The teams have an even record, with 11 wins apiece to go along with 10 draws.

The teams cancelled each other out in their league meetings last season, drawing 1-1 both at St Mary’s Stadium in November 2018 and at Vicarage Road in April 2019. In fact, the Saints and the Hornets have played to three successive league draws, with their prior meeting in January 2018 ending 2-2.
