Tight at the top heading into MotoGP Round 5

2019 MotoGP season

Round 5, French Grand Prix

Circuit Bugatti, Le Mans

Sunday 19 May 2019

A mere nine points covers the top four riders in the 2019 MotoGP World Championship heading into Round 5, the French Grand Prix at the Circuit Bugatti, Le Mans on Sunday 19 May.

Sitting in top spot is defending champion Marc Marquez, with the Honda rider recording 70 points. The Spaniard has racked up two wins (including at the previous round in his home country) and a second-place finish this season, and his advantage at the top would be more than a mere point had he not surprisingly crashed out when leading the Grand Prix of the Americas midway through last month.

Breathing down his neck is Suzuki rider Alex Rins (69), who took full advantage of Marquez’s retirement in Austin to secure victory in Round 3. Added to a second in Spain last time out, as well as fourth- and fifth-place finishes at the start of the season, and one can see how the 23-year-old has been the most consistent performer.

Ducati’s Andrea Dovizioso (67) and Yamaha’s Valentino Rossi (61) would also fall into this category, with the pair using their race craft and intelligence to counteract a relative lack of pace in recent rounds.

The French Grand Prix should see Marquez once again being the dominant force (he won at the Bugatti Circuit in Le Mans last year, keeping up a streak of seven successive Spanish wins in MotoGP at the venue), though he will need to be wary of complacency.

Other riders to look out for are French favourites Fabio Quartararo and Johann Zarco, who will both be looking to out on a strong show in front of their home supporters.
