Eagles Battle for AFCON Bronze

2019 Africa Cup of Nations

Tunisia vs Nigeria

3rd/4th Place Match
Al-Salam Stadium, Cairo
Wednesday, July 17th
Kick-off at 19:00

As Africa’s footballing spectacle draws nearer its close, the competition still has two mouth-watering fixtures to serve to its fans. First the Super Eagles of Nigeria take on Tunisia’s Eagles of Carthage in the Third/Fourth place match to determine who will take home the bronze medal before Sunday’s showpiece final between Senegal and Algeria will see one crowned as the continental champion.

Tunisia have been one of the standout teams of the tournament thus far and despite not registering a single victory in the group stage (they progressed to the last 16 as one of the best third-place teams with 3 points courtesy of three successive draws) they edged 2015 runners-up Ghana on penalties before easing past this year’s surprise package Madagascar 3-0 to reach the last four for the first time since they last lifted the trophy – on home soil – back in 2004.

Their hopes were dashed against Senegal however as Naim Sliti’s missed spot-kick - with the scores level at 0-0 - ultimately proved decisive before Dylan Bronn slotted past his own goalkeeper in extra-time to hand the Lions of Taranga a 1-0 win.

After Nigeria snatched victory with almost the final kick of their quarter-final clash against South Africa, they were then handed a taste of their own medicine as Riyad Mahrez curled in a sensational free-kick deep into stoppage time to send Algeria through to Sunday’s final at the expense of the three-time African champions.

The pair will now face off in Wednesday’s battle for the bronze medal. The pair have clashed a total of 17 times in the past with very little to separate them.

The previous three meetings between them have all ended in draws.

Nigeria’s last victory over their northern neighbours was a 4-2 win in the African Cup of Nations’ group-stage back in January 2000.

They came off second best however when they met in the tournament again four years later – this time in the semi-finals – as Tunisia overcame a thrilling penalty shootout in front of their adoring fans.
