Following a memorable 2026 World Cup tournament overall, France and England will shake hands at the Miami Stadium on Saturday night as they look to head home with the bronze medal around their necks.

The Three Lions were drawn alongside Croatia, Ghana and Panama in Group L where they ended the initial phase of the tournament at the top of their group.

England commenced the tournament with a statemen- making 4-2 win over Croatia at the Dallas Stadium on 17 June, owing to a brace by Harry Kane while Jude Bellingham and Marcus Rashford recorded their names on the scoresheet.

Thomas Tuchel’s side then collected a point in a 0-0 draw with Ghana in matchday two, while they rounded off their group obligations with a 2-0 win over Panama on 27 June.

During the knockout phase, England noted a 2-1 win against DR Congo in the Round of 32, before picking up a 3-2 victory against Mexico in the Round of 16. The English then put themselves among the favourites to land the trophy with a 2-1 win against Norway in the quarter-finals, as Bellingham’s double completed a dramatic comeback at the Miami Stadium on 11 July.

However, England fell short in the final four, recording a 2-1 defeat against Argentina at the Atlanta Stadium on Wednesday night as Enzo Fernandez and Lautaro Martinez scored late to qualify Argentina for their second-consecutive World Cup final.

France were pitted alongside Norway, Senegal and Iraq in Group I and finished in first-place with three wins to their names.

Les Bleus opened their World Cup campaign with a 3-1 win against Senegal at the New York New Jersey Stadium on 16 June, with Kylian Mbappe (2) and Bradley Barcola getting on the scoresheet.

Following convincing wins against Iraq and Norway thereafter, France were then scheduled to take on Sweden in the Round of 32 where they noted a 3-0 win at the New York New Jersey Stadium.

After a nervy 1-0 win against Paraguay in the Round of 16, France dispatched tournament dark horses Morocco in the quarters with Ousmane Dembele and Mbappe scoring in a 2-0 win at the Boston Stadium on 9 July.

Nonetheless, France failed to book their ticket into the World Cup final for the second competition running following a 2-0 loss against Spain in the semi-finals at the Dallas Stadium on Tuesday, 14 July.

As far as individual players are concerned, Mbappe will be gunning for the Golden Boot award after scoring eight goals alongside Lionel Messi with one game left to play.

Bellingham will likewise look to cap off an impressive tournament after noting six goals in seven matches so far.
