Five Greatest Olympians of all time

The world will have to wait until 2021 for the Tokyo 2020 Olympic Games after it was that the global showpiece has been postponed due to the Coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic.

While the world is in lockdown and sporting events on an indefinite break, we identify back at the five greatest Olympians of all time:

Michael Phelps

The American swimmer is the most decorated athlete in Olympic history. In total, he won 28 Olympic medals which include a record 23 gold.

He won eight of those gold medals at the 2008 showpiece in Beijing, China where he beat Mark Spitz's record of medals at a single Olympic Games which had stood since 1972 with victory in the 4×100-meter medley relay.

Larisa Latynina

Latynina is the most successful female athlete in Olympic history having accumulated a grand total of 18 medals across three Olympic Games for the Soviet Union.

She was to credit for establishing the Soviet Union as a world powerhouse in gymnastics from 1956-1964 and with nine golds scattered across three Games she is tied second for the most top of the podium finishes in Olympic history.

Carl Lewis

Carl Lewis

Lewis won gold medals in four different events, including the 100m, 200m, 4x100m and long jump across four Olympic Games.

The American track and field athlete won a total of nine gold medals and one silver while he is one of only three Olympic athletes who won a gold medal in the same individual event in four consecutive Olympic Games.

Usain Bolt

Usain Bolt

The Jamaican sprinter did the unthinkable by claiming gold in the 100m and 200m at three successive Olympic Games.

He also shattered the World and Olympic record in both events while he also holds the 4x100m Olympic record alongside countrymen Nesta Carter, Michael Frater and Yohan Blake.

Bolt won a total of eight medals, all of them gold and it would've been nine had Carter not tested positive for a banned stimulant in re-tests last year which stripped the Jamaican team of the 4x100m relay they won in Beijing.

Mark Spitz

The American swimmer was the first athlete to win seven gold medals at the same Olympic Games when he did so in 1972 and he held that record until Michael Phelps won eight in the 2008 showpiece.

In total, Spitz won 11 medals including one silver and one bronze over the course of two Olympic Games.
