African Footballers in European Action Wrap

The major highlight of African players in major European Leagues this past weekend was Mohamed Salah’s fine performance which helped Roma claim a win over Juventus to put some life back into the Serie A title race.

The Egyptian star put in a powerful showing and provided an assist as the capital city side defeated Juve 3-1 at the Olympic Stadium on Sunday night to reduce the gap between the clubs to just four points. Gabon’s Mario Lemina scored the ‘Old Lady’s’ goal.

With two rounds of the Serie A season remaining, Juve are still looking good to claim the championship, but Roma have at least given themselves a fighting chance of an upset, even if their fate remains very much out of their own hands.

Elsewhere in Serie A, Senegalese compatriots Khouma Babacar and Keita Balde both got on the scoresheet for their respective clubs as Fiorentina defeated Lazio 3-2.

In Spain’s La Liga, Kevin-Prince Boateng recovered from a midweek training injury to feature for Las Palmas, but he could do nothing to prevent his team falling to a 4-1 defeat at the hands of title-chasing Barcelona.

In the Bundesliga, highly-rated Guinea Naby Keita put in a strong showing for RB Leipzig as they agonisingly lost 5-4 at home to champions Bayern Munich, who scored the decisive goal deep in injury time.

Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang

Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang scored his 29th Bundesliga goal of the season (he is second on the top scorers’ chart behind Bayern’s Robert Lewandowski, 30 goals) in Borussia Dortmund’s 1-1 draw with Augsburg, while Salomon Kalou scored in Hertha Berlin’s 2-0 win at Darmstadt.

In England, Victor Moses became a Premier League champion as Chelsea wrapped up the title with a 1-0 win at West Bromwich Albion, while Wilfried Zaha and Victor Wanyama starred for Crystal Palace and Tottenham Hotspur in their respective wins over Hull City and Manchester United respectively.
