2021/22 English Premier League

Matchday 33

Southampton v Arsenal

St Mary's Stadium
Southampton, England
Saturday, 16 April 2022
Kick-off is at 14h00

Arsenal will look to get their top-four challenge back on track against Southampton at St Mary's on Saturday, April 16.

The Gunners have opened the door for arch-rivals Tottenham to clinch the final Champions League place after suffering back-to-back defeats against Crystal Palace and Brighton.

Mikel Arteta's side are three points behind Spurs in fifth place, although they do have a game in hand on their neighbours from north London.

Arteta is urging his players to pick themselves up and face the challenge head on after another poor performance in losing 2-1 to the Seagulls at the Emirates Stadium.

"What happens is, criticise ourselves a lot, get slapped again, because we were really poor in the first half, and lift ourselves up because we know that this route is taking us nowhere, especially where we want to be," the Spaniard said.

"We have everything to play for still in the last eight games that we have to have with that level of energy and visualising the challenge, the beautiful challenge that we have ahead, and don't sit back and let's see what happens."

The Saints will be smarting after the 6-0 mauling at the hands of Chelsea on the south coast this past weekend.

Ralph Hasenhuttl's team have now lost four of their last five outings to drop to 14th in the standings, although they are just one point outside the top 10.

Hasenhuttl acknowledged his players were second best in every department against the Blues and wants to see a reaction from them for the visit of Arsenal.

"We are today far away from being competitive and that's the reason we deserved to lose," the German said after the heavy loss.

"We have now time to work on that and hopefully show a different face next week. Definitely, we have to show up next week and definitely show a reaction."
