2025/26 English Premier League

Matchday 2

Manchester City v Tottenham Hotspur

Etihad Stadium

Manchester, England

Saturday, 23 August 2025

Kick-off is at 13h30

Tottenham will be looking to build on their winning start under Thomas Frank when they travel to the Etihad Stadium for a Premier League encounter with Manchester City on Saturday, August 23 in the lunch-time kick-off.

Frank left Brentford in the off-season to take over the reins from Ange Postecoglou, who was sacked despite ending Spurs' 17-year trophy drought with a 1-0 victory over Manchester United in the Europa League final.

Frank's side won just two of their seven pre-season outings, beating Reading 2-0 and Arsenal 1-0, while they went down 4-0 to Bayern Munich before losing to Paris Saint-Germain on penalties in the UEFA Super Cup.

The North Londoners kicked off the new campaign with a 3-0 win against newly-promoted Burnley at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium on August 16 which featured new signings Mohammed Kudus, Mathys Tel and Joao Palhinha.

The Citizens began their title challenge by dispatching Wolves 4-0 at Molineux on August 16, having endured their worst season under Pep Guardiola in 2024-25 after finishing 13 points behind champions Liverpool in third place.

Guardiola's side didn't have much joy at the 2025 Club World Cup either, bowing out in the round of 16 following a 4-3 loss to Al-Hilal after extra time, although they did win their opening three matches against Wydad Casablanca (2-0), Al Ain (6-0) and Juventus (5-2).

City decided to have a proper rest after their exertions in the United States, playing just one friendly in pre-season as they ran out 3-0 victors over Palermo.

New signings James Trafford, Rayan Ait-Nouri and Tijjani Reijnders started against the Old Gold, while Rayan Cherki made his debut off the bench.

Guardiola still sees plenty of room for improvement after admitting his team weren't at their best in the second half in the Black Country.

"We didn't have the ball, we struggled to build up and our pressing was a little bit flat but it happens," the Spaniard said of their performance after the break.

"When you are away in the Premier League and you concede one goal you start to tremble. I liked it, but there are many things we have to do better.

"Last season we were back when we won 2-0 at Chelsea and look what happened afterwards. We won today. If you tell me we were back in the second half, I'd say no."

Frank was pleased with Spurs' display against the Clarets, but insists the victory will mean nothing if they don't perform against City.

"Perfect start or dream start, we all know we need to follow up on it. Today, I will just enjoy it and I hope the players, the club and the fans enjoy it, because that is important," the Dane said.

"I think overall it was a good performance, not through the roof, a good performance against a difficult opponent. It's never easy in the Premier League, we know that and after the very short turnaround against PSG, no complaints."
