As kings of Italian football, Antonio Conte and Napoli will begin their
Serie A title defence with a trip to the Mapei Stadium this week where they will take on newly promoted Sassoulo on Saturday evening.
Following a memorable 2024/25 campaign for Napoli, Conte guided his side to their second Scudetto in three years last time out.
In preparation for the upcoming season, Napoli secured the services of former Manchester City great Kevin De Bruyne to supplement the goal scoring prowess of Scott McTominay, who won the 24/25 Most Valuable Player award.
However, Napoli will be without Romelu Lukaku for their opening league fixture, after the Belgian suffered a thigh injury during pre-season.
As for Sassuolo, Fabio Grosso and his charges returned to Serie A football after just one season after they secured promotion from Serie B in April.
Reflecting on the season ahead, Conte believes that his side are a ‘work in progress’ while they look to manage a packed fixture list this year.
“It’s true we won the title, which was extraordinary and incredible, but now we need to take the second step before we can think about taking the third,” Conte said.
“Balance is essential for all teams. When I say we are a work in progress, I mean also that we are trying different solutions. We did it throughout last season too.”
