Among the leading golf candidates today, Scottie Scheffler currently reigns supreme in the World Rankings and is a firm favourite heading into the Tour Championship on Thursday, albeit while fighting a crippling illness.
Scheffler already had an eventful 2026 campaign, starting the year by winning the American Express in January, four strokes ahead of Jason Day, Ryan Gerard, Matt McCarty, and Andrew Putnam.
Fast forward to August, Scheffler then came out on tops at the FedEx St. Jude Championship with a score of -17 to par, eight strokes ahead of Kim Si-Woo.
Scheffler last featured at the BMW Championship earlier this month, where he was tied at 12th place as he battled through pain before revealing that he contracted hand, foot, and mouth disease.
Amid struggles to grip his clubs and bodily blisters, the 30-year-old expressed that he was too stubborn to pull out of the tournament entirely.
“I got the hand, foot, mouth [disease]. So you’ve got blisters on your hands, and in your throat, and on your feet. So, to start the week, it was pretty painful to grip the club,” Scheffler said.
“If I was smarter, maybe I would have pulled out. But I was playing so good, I felt like if I could knock it out quickly, and just get through the first couple rounds, I’d still have a chance. But I think that’s part of my stubbornness, probably.
“That’s probably a strength of mine, and a weakness at times. I’ve never been one to pull out of a tournament; especially in the middle of it, that’s really frustrating for me.”
