Canadian GP Preview : Can Ferrari Continue Dominate?

2017 Formula One World Championship

Round 7, Canadian Grand Prix
Circuit Gilles-Villeneuve, Montreal
Sunday 11 June, 20h00 CAT

Ferrari are once again expected to be the quickest cars heading into Montreal, with the Circuit Gilles-Villeneuve a street track which has similar characteristics to Monaco - though it is significantly faster and much tougher on the brakes, which should play into the hands of the ‘Silver Arrows’. Ferrari’s great advantage at the last race was their ability to ‘switch on’ the tyres and gain a greater level of mechanical grip. The Scuderia will expect a similar pattern in Montreal and hope that it gives them an edge, particularly in qualifying.

Canada has traditionally been a happy hunting ground for the Italian team, as they are equal with McLaren as the most successful constructor in the race’s history, with 13 wins each. However, Ferrari’s last win in Canada came with Michael Schumacher at the wheel back in 2004. The dominant force in Canada in recent years has been Lewis Hamilton, who enters the 2017 edition looking to claim a hat-trick of wins in Montreal and his sixth overall. The Englishman will hope Montreal once again proves kind to him as he looks to eat into Vettel’s advantage in the title race. Also keep an eye out for Red Bull, who looked to have narrowed the gap to Ferrari and Mercedes with their improved pace in the previous round. Daniel Ricciardo won the 2014 Canadian GP and leads the charge for the Austrian team.
