Patrick Cantlay will be hoping to start the new year with a victory at the 2021 The American Express.

The American golfer had a successful amateur career and was the number one golfer in the World Amateur Golf Ranking for 55 weeks.

Cantlay turned professional in June 2012 and he has since won three times on the PGA Tour.

The 28-year-old won his first PGA Tour title at the Shriners Hospitals for Children Open on the second extra hole of a three-man playoff in November 2017.

In June 2019, Cantlay lifted the Memorial Tournament in Dublin, Ohio, a result that lifted him into the world top-10 for the first time.

Cantlay shot a final round of 64 to come from four strokes behind the 54-hole leader Martin Kaymer and win his second PGA Tour title.

The California-born golfer then clinched the Zozo Championship at Sherwood Country Club in Thousand Oaks, California.

The event normally takes place in Japan but was moved to California in 2020 due to the Covid-19 pandemic.

Cantlay has finished second twice in the Shriners Hospitals for Children Open in 2018 and 2019.

The 2011 Jack Nicklaus Award winner reflected on his career which has since his rise from being 415th in the Official World Golf Ranking to his current position, nine.

"What did the last five years teach me? When something really bad or life-altering happens, you want to acknowledge that it has affected you," Cantlay said.

"You don't want to shy away from it or pretend like it never happened. You want to realize the great impact it has had on you,

"But at the same time, even if it's massive, you don't want to have it consume you so you become jaded or apathetic or negative, and you don't like the person you become," he continued.

"Walking the fine line of having something bad happen to you, taking your time to mourn and letting it affect you without letting it beat you down so hard that it takes you away from what you want to accomplish is very difficult.

"Accepting it and realizing it happened and dealing with it as best you can—that's kind of the art of life."
