Matchday 19

Manchester City v Leicester City

Manchester City will be looking to continue their incredible form in the Premier League when Leicester City visit the Etihad Stadium on December 26.

Pep Guardiola's side have put together an eight-match winning streak to surge to the top of the table, three points clear of Liverpool in second place.

City cruised to a 4-0 victory over Newcastle United on December 19 which took their tally for the campaign to 44 goals, with just the Reds having scored more in the league (50).

The defending champions also set two new top-flight records with their success on Tyneside - a 34th win in 2021 and their 18th on the road - and Guardiola praised the level of consistency shown by his players.

"A lot of victories means how consistent we've been, not just this season but over the last four or five years in winning and winning and winning," the Spaniard said.

"It's a record from a long time ago, so it's not easy to take it, we get it. One day it's going to happen, all the records will be broken but it's nice, it means how good the guys are doing so far."

The Foxes have struggled to put together a run of results in recent weeks, with their last back-to-back wins coming in October.

Brendan Rodgers' men thumped the Magpies 4-0 on December 12 as they bounced back from a 2-1 loss at Aston Villa, having drawn 2-2 with Southampton prior to that.

The East Midlands outfit are in the top half of the standings, but find themselves a long way off the Champions League spots in ninth position.

Leicester City manager Brendan Rodgers admits the festive period is challenging enough without the Covid situation, which has amplified matters over the past fortnight.

"It's an incredible run of games and that's a challenging fixture list at any time, when you have a full squad," he said.

"With the numbers we've had out, of course, it's extremely challenging. One thing we've always tried to do is respect the competition and get on with it. That's exactly what we'll do."
