Group D at the Africa Cup of Nations is delicately poised heading into matchday two with Senegal set to face DR Congo at Grand Stade de Tanger on Saturday afternoon.
The Lions of Teranga commenced their 2025 AFCON bid with an emphatic 3-0 win against Botswana on Tuesday night courtesy of goals by Nicolas Jackson (2) and Cherif Ndiaye.
As for The Leopards, DR Congo recorded a 1-0 win against Benin at the Al Medina Stadium in Rabat on Tuesday, as they kept up with the pace set by their upcoming opponents.
Regarding history, Senegal lifted their first and only AFCON title in 2021, while DR Congo are two-time winners of the popular showpiece.
As it stands, Senegal lead the way in Group D with a superior goal difference compared to DR Congo.
Speaking after Senegal’s big win over Botswana, the Lions of Teranga coach Pape Thiaw praised his side’s professionalism for their performance at the Tangier Grand Stadium.
“We faced a very strong team, with a deep and compact defensive block,” Thiaw said.
“We could have scored more, but what stands out most is my team’s commitment and discipline. What I take away from this match is the team’s professionalism.
“The players followed instructions and got the job done.”
