Deportivo Alaves vs Atletico Madrid

Deportivo Alaves will chase an upset win over Atletico Madrid when the teams meet at Estadio de Mendizorroza on the afternoon of Sunday 3 January 2021. The match is one of 10 spread over 2-4 January as part of Matchday 17 in the 2020-21 LaLiga season.

Deportivo's last home outing brought them a 2-1 victory over Eibar on December 23, with goals from Edgar Mendez and Deyverson breaking a three-game winless streak in LaLiga – helping to push the team in blue and white away from the relegation zone.

"The important thing is to go to the end with options and it seems that in the first minutes we wanted to take them off but, although it cost us, the team never fell apart at any time,” explained Deportivo manager Pablo Machin. “We were just winners because we were superior in the second half."

Atletico's last away game saw them claim an impressive 2-0 win at Real Sociedad, thanks to strikes from Mario Hermoso and Marcos Llorente. The three points kept up their status as title favourites, and was manager Diego Simeone's 300th victory in charge of the club.

"I prepared myself for what is happening, but I also know that they [the club] could kick me out tomorrow," said Simeone in downplaying the milestone. "We have to consolidate the growth of the club, but for this we need reality. The only thing that counts is when the game starts and the team must show its worth."

In head-to-head stats, Deportivo and Atletico have met in 16 matches across all competitions since 1998. The Rojiblancos have claimed eight wins compared to four for the Babazorros, while four games have been drawn.

Atletico took four points off Deportivo last season, drawing 1-1 at the Mendizorroza in October 2019 followed by a 2-1 home win at Estadio Wanda Metropolitano in June 2020, with goals from Saul and Diego Costa.
