England vs Brazil

Tuesday, November 14th
Wembley Stadium, London
Kick-off at 20:00 (8pm) GMT

The Three Lions won their first ever meeting with the Selecao back in 1956 with 4-2 victory in a friendly played at the old Wembley. England had to wait another 28 years before they tasted success again, in a friendly at the famed Maracana in Rio de Janeiro for their first away win over the ‘The Green and Yellow’. On Tuesday, they will face-off at Wembley once more as both sides begin their preparations toward Russia 2018.

While there seems on the surface little to separate them, in reality they are worlds apart. England’s most recent and only triumph to date in the FIFA World Cup remains at the 1966 event which was played on British soil. Brazil have lifted the trophy three times since then, and although their last was 15 years ago back in 2002, they still seem closer to a sixth title than England do to that elusive second. In four World Cup encounters against Brazil, they have earned just a solitary point, in a drab 0-0 draw in the 1958 group-stage in Sweden - the first goalless draw in World Cup finals history. They have lost the other three with an aggregate score of 6-2, with the 2002 quarter-finals living long in the memory of football fans around the globe.

England vs Brazil World Cup results:

21/06/2002 – Brazil 2-1 England (Quarter-Final)
07/06/1970 – England 0-1 Brazil (Group Stage)
10/06/1962 – Brazil 3-1 England (Quarter-Final)
11/06/1958 – Brazil 0-0 England (Group Stage)
Gareth Southgate’s men are coming off the back of a rather disappointing 0-0 draw at home to the current world champions Germany in what was a fixture that had so much hype surrounding it only for it to fall short of lofty expectations. Brazil, who wrapped up qualification in October with a 3-0 win over Chile, dispatched Japan with ease 3-1 in their first friendly since, played on Friday night.

This will be the first meeting between the two in four years, since the pair played out a thrilling 2-2 draw in the first game at the new Maracana, just a year ahead of the 2014 World Cup in Brazil. The last time the sides played at Wembley was just four months earlier when Wayne Rooney and Frank Lampard scored in a 2-1 win to register their first victory over Brazil in 23 years!
