Atletico Madrid can expect a stern test from Real Betis when they lock horns at the Metropolitano on Sunday, February 8.

Los Colchoneros have leapfrogged Villarreal into third place after embarking on a six-match unbeaten run in La Liga, although they're some 10 points off the summit which is occupied by Barcelona.

Diego Simeone's side surprisingly dropped two points in a 0-0 stalemate with relegation-threatened Levante on January 31, but the Yellow Submarine failed to take advantage after they were held to a 2-2 draw by Osasuna.

As such, Atleti are still three points clear of Villarreal, who have a game in hand, while Betis gained ground on both teams as they returned to winning ways with a 2-1 success against Valencia.

The Andalusian outfit climbed back into the Europa League berth after Espanyol's poor run of form continued with a 2-1 reverse to Alaves - their fourth loss in five outings.

Manuel Pellegrini's side are one point clear of the Parakeets in fifth position and they trail Atletico by 10. The last meeting between the two clubs saw the Madrid giants run out 2-0 victors at La Cartuja on October 10.

Simeone admitted that fatigue crept in against the Frogs in the second half after controlling proceedings in the opening 45 minutes, but lacking that important goal.

"The team played well again in the first half, we controlled the game, we could have scored a goal, they defended well, with hard work and determination. We tried to break through, but we couldn't," he said.

"In the second half, the fatigue from these last few games every three days showed, which is logical. It wasn't the same as the first half, it was more even, with some chances for them, but no clear opportunities for either side.

"We lacked fluid play. What we had in the first half wasn't there in the second, and that's why we had fewer chances."
