Germany Host Spain In Champion Battle

The winners of the 2014 FIFA World Cup, Germany, will take on the previous holders of the trophy, Spain, who won their maiden crown in South Africa in 2010 in what is expected to be an epic showdown between two of the top six sides in global football.

Germany vs Spain

Friday, March 23rd
Espirit Arena, Dusseldorf
Kick-off at 19:45 (7:45pm) GMT

Germany vs Spain

The pair will face off in a friendly match for the first time since November 2014, just months after Die Mannschaft’s sensational World Cup triumph in Brazil, which the German’s won 1-0 thanks to Toni Kroos’ (who happens to play his football in Spain for Real Madrid) 89th minute strike. This will be the 23rd time in history that the sides will come to blows since their first-ever meeting, a friendly international, in May 1935. Carles Puyol’s header famously knocked Joachim Low’s side out in the semi-finals in 2010 on their way to World Cup glory before the Germans eventually got their own hands on the trophy four years later.

The duo were among four sides to go unbeaten through the entire European qualification process as they finished on top of their respective groups and booked their WC spots in Russia 2018. Germany, however, were the only team to win all 10 of their matches – a perfect record in Group C as well as being joint-top scorers in the campaign with 43 goals sparking fears that the number 1 ranked team could yet retain their crown when the tournament kicks off in June.
