2021/22 English Premier League

Matchday 23

Southampton v Manchester City

St Mary's Stadium
Southampton, England
Saturday, 22 January 2022
Kick-off is at 17h30

Southampton will attempt to stop the juggernaut that is Manchester City when they do battle in a Premier League clash at St Mary's on January 22.

Pep Guardiola's side appear to be on course for a fourth top-flight title in five years as they hold an 11-point lead over closest challengers Liverpool.

The Citizens beat third-placed Chelsea 1-0 at the Etihad Stadium on January 15 to extend the gap between them to 13 points.

It was their 12th league victory on the spin since the shock 2-0 home defeat to Crystal Palace on October 30.

City have managed to win every game this season in which they took the lead and Guardiola hailed his players for showing the desire to keep going week on week.

"It shows we believe in what we do. It doesn't matter what happens, we try to do it and go and go and go," the Spaniard said.

"The biggest achievement is that they give their best every game, otherwise in this league you cannot win 12 games in a row.

"It's impossible. The opponents you see and watch every week are massive."

The Saints enjoyed a promising run of results prior to the 3-1 defeat at Wolves on January 15, which included a 3-2 win over West Ham and a 1-1 draw with Tottenham.

The setback at Molineux arrested a four-match unbeaten streak for Ralph Hasenhuttl's men and saw them slip to 12th position in the table on 24 points, one outside the top-10.

Hasenhuttl praised the fighting spirit of his players in the Black Country as they gave it their all to get back into the contest against Wolves.

"We never stopped fighting for the result, after [James Ward-Prowse] Prowsey's unbelievable free-kick there was another chance for Romain [Perraud] where he has to make the goal," the German said in his post-match interview.

"This is the thing where we have to complain that we have the chances but either the goalkeeper made good saves or we haven't found the back of the net but we tried everything."
