Jason Day will be determined to emulate golf legend Phil Mickelson by winning the Farmers Insurance Open for the third time.

Mickelson won this tournament in 1993, 2000 and 2001, and he is the second most successful golfer in the history of the tournament after Tiger Woods.

Day is a two-time Farmers Insurance Open winner having lifted his maiden title in 2015 before winning the tournament again in 2018.

The Australian won the 2015 tournament with a score of 279 (−9) after prevailing in a four-way playoff over Harris English, J. B. Holmes and Scott Stallings.

Day then won the Farmers Insurance Open for the second time in 2018 after he defeated Alex Norén and Ryan Palmer in a sudden-death playoff that lasted six extra holes.

The 35-year-old is a former world number one in the World Golf Ranking, having first achieved the ranking in September 2015 and he is currently ranked 104th in the world.

The last time Day tasted success on the PGA Tour was in 2018 as he clinched the Wells Fargo Championship and he will be eager to end his trophy drought at the Torrey Pines Golf Course.

Day, who was the 2016 Mark H. McCormack Award winner, showed off his new swing at last weekend's American Express where he finished 18th.

“Going into this year I did some swing changes with my coach, and I feel like those are slowly cementing themselves in there,” Day said.

“I’m shallowing it out,” Day continued. “The swing has changed dramatically. It took me about a year and half to get the body correct.

"And the body movement was correct until I could actually get into shallowing it out correctly.”

Woods is the most decorated golfer in the history of the Farmers Insurance Open with seven titles.
