3–16 July 2023

No. 1 seed Carlos Alcaraz will have a battle on his hands against Holger Rune in a bid to reach the semi-finals at Wimbledon for the first time.

The Spaniard is seeking the second Grand Slam of his career after winning the US Open in 2022, while he made it to the last four at the French Open a month ago before losing to eventual champion Novak Djokovic.

Alcaraz achieved a personal best at the All England Lawn Tennis and Croquet Club on July 10 when he defeated Matteo Berrettini in four sets to progress beyond the fourth round.

The world No. 1 fell at the same stage in 2022, having made it to the second round on his Wimbledon debut the previous year.

After cruising past Jeremy Chardy (6-0, 6-2, 7-5) and Alexandre Muller (6-4, 7-6, 6-3) in the opening two rounds, Alcaraz dropped his first set in a 6-3, 6-7, 6-3, 7-5 victory over Nicolas Jarry before getting the better of Berrettini.

The 20-year-old received widespread praise for his show of sportsmanship in applauding Berrettini as the Italian left the court to a standing ovation.

"I knew it was going to be really tough, Matteo is a great player, he made the final here on grass. He's playing great," Alcaraz said after the match.

"It's not easy after losing the first set. I knew I was going to have my chances. Something I've been working on is to stay focused and not lose my mind a little bit. That part I did great. It's something that I really wanted.

"Last year I lost in the fourth round. I came here this year with that goal, first get into the quarter-finals and now I'm looking for more. My dream is to play a final here, to win the title one day. I hope I reach that dream this year but right now it's great to be in the quarter-finals."
