2026 World Cup
Quarterfinal
Spain vs Belgium
Friday 10 July
19:00
Los Angeles Stadium
Spain and Belgium will light up the Los Angeles Stadium in the ‘City of Angels’ when they meet for a 2026 World Cup Quarterfinal on Friday evening. Kick-off at 19:00.
Current form
Spain claimed a hard-fought 1-0 win over Iberian rivals Portugal in a Round of 16 clash in Dallas on Monday evening. La Roja kept up their outstanding record of not having conceded a goal at the tournament thus far, and struck the winner in injury tine via substitute Mikel Merino.
It was not the most flowing and cohesive performance from the 2010 world champions, but they continue to be rock-solid in defence and have the quality in attacking areas to find a solution for almost every challenge they have faced thus far.
Belgium put up their best showing of the tournament on Tuesday morning when they thrashed co-hosts USA 4-1 in Seattle. The Red Devils scored via Charles De Ketelaere (2), Hans Vanaken and Romelu Lukaku – but it was their control and penetration (even with star men such as Kevin De Bruyne and Jeremy Doku left out of the starting XI) that caught the eye.
Team news
Spain’s Yeremy Pino, Victor Munoz and Nico Williams remain highly doubtful due to injury issues. La Roja are likely to select the same team that did duty against Portugal.
Belgium will be without Amadou Onana, who remains sidelined with injury. Coach Rudi Garcia is also likely to keep stars Kevin De Bruyne, Jeremy Doku and Romelu Lukaku on the bench, given the strong performance of his starting XI against the USA.
Quotes
Spain coach Luis de la Fuente
“It was truly a fantastic game, a final before the final, and, as expected, we suffered until the very end. We played a very complete game, and the most important players are those who come off the bench.”
Belgium coach Rudi Garcia
“We wanted to play higher up. We scored the first goal from winning the ball high up the pitch, and the same happened with the third goal. We played with control, determination and commitment. It was a great night for us."
Head-to-head
Spain and Belgium have met in 23 previous matches, with La Roja claiming 12 wins compared to six for the Red Devils, while five games have been drawn. The teams have met twice in World Cup history: in the 1986 quarterfinals, Belgium won 5-6 on penalties after a 1-1, while a 1990 group stage clash saw Spain triumph 2-1.
