American starlet Reilly Opelka will be hoping to cause an upset when he faces Russian star Daniil Medvedev in a 2021 French Open third-round match on June 4.

Opelka reached this stage of the Roland Garros after eliminating Slovakian player Andrej Martin and Jaume Munar of Spain.

The 23-year-old is hoping to go all the way and clinch his maiden Grand Slam title this year having failed to advance beyond the third round of a major tournament.

Meanwhile, Medvedev booked his place in the third round after securing wins over Alexander Bublik of Kazakhastan and American player Tommy Paul.

The 25-year-old has never won a Grand Slam title, but he was the runner-up at the 2019 US Open and the 2021 Australian Open, where he lost to Rafael Nadal and Novak Djokovic, respectively.

This will be the fourth meeting between Opelka and Medvedev in competitive matches.

Medvedev has dominated this rivalry having won two matches compared to Opelka's one.

The winner between Opelka and Medvedev will take on either Marcos Giron of the USA or Chilean player Cristian Garin in the French Open in the fourth round.

Asked if he feared Opelka's serve Medvedev said: "I’m never scared, but it’s a tough draw. no matter if you play him in the final or the first round, it’s always a tough draw. he doesn’t give you rhythm.

"I lost against him actually (in their most recent meeting in St Petersburg last year). I was feeling great, had a lot of opportunities, but he was serving aces on some important points.

"So he's not an easy opponent, but i think actually clay will help for this one. I’m hoping I'm going to love clay even more after this match, but we are going to see."
