2022 FIA Formula One World Championship

Eight Round

2022 Azerbaijan Grand Prix

Azerbaijan Baku City Circuit
Baku, Azerbaijan
Sunday, 12 June 2022

The 2022 Azerbaijan Grand Prix will take place in the capital and largest city of the European country, Baku on June 12.

This will be the eighth round of the 2022 FIA Formula One World Championship season and it will be held at the Baku City Circuit.

Having been established in 2017, no Formula One driver has ever won in Baku twice so far, although the race was won twice by Mercedes (2018 and 2019) and Red Bull (2017 and 2021).

The most recent race in the current campaign was the 2022 Monaco Grand Prix which was won by Sergio Perez of Red Bull Racing-RBPT on May 29 and he also won last year's Azerbaijan Grand Prix.

Ferrari driver Carlos Sainz Jr and Max Verstappen of Red Bull Racing-RBPT finished second and third respectively at the Circuit de Monaco.

Therefore, Verstappen consolidated his spot at the top of the 2022 Drivers' Championship standings having accumulated 125 points.

Ferrari driver Charles Leclerc (116 points) and Perez (110 points) are placed second and third respectively in the standings as the battle to catch Verstappen continues.

Mercedes' George Russell (84 points), Sainz Jr (83 points) and Lewis Hamilton (50 points) of Mercedes are placed fourth, fifth and sixth respectively in the standings.

Having finished 17th at last year's Azerbaijan Grand Prix as a Williams-Mercedes driver Russell, who finished fifth at the recent Monaco Grand Prix, is looking forward to returning to Baku.

"[The car] definitely will be more suited, but I don't think it's going to transform our finishing position. Around Monaco we were six tenths behind, and into Baku we will probably be three tenths behind the front runners we hope, for the best case," Russell said.

"I'm praying the car doesn't feel like it [did at Monaco]. This was the worst in this car so far because of the potholes. I'm looking forward to it going away – just my teeth, my jaw moving all the time. I'm done shaking. 'I don't know if it's the porpoising. I hope it's not what we had in the last race, so I want it to not be a problem.

"But if there are potholes, then in the corners we can have them."

Red Bull Racing-RBPT are placed at the top of the Constructors' Championship standings and they are followed by Ferrari and Mercedes respectively.
