Aston Martin's Fernando Alonso has vowed to "crush" their rivals at the Canadian Grand Prix on Sunday, June 18 after a disappointing outing in Montmelo last time out.

The Spaniard has enjoyed an impressive start to life with his new team, claiming five podium finishes in the opening seven races, with the highlight a P2 at the Monaco Grand Prix.

Alonso had closed within 12 points of Red Bull Racing's Sergio Perez in the drivers' standings going into the Spanish Grand Prix, but he went off the track during the first session of qualifying and could only recover to start ninth on the grid.

The former two-time World Champion eventually finished 0.807 seconds behind team-mate Lance Stroll in P7, describing it as his "worst performance" of 2023.

Alonso remains in third place, although the gap to Perez now stands at 18 points, while Mercedes' Lewis Hamilton is just 12 behind him in fourth position taking P2 in Spain.

The 41-year-old, who won the Canadian Grand Prix back in 2006, insisted his performance on home soil was a once-off and believes Aston Martin will have the edge over Mercedes and Ferrari once their planned upgrades are implemented.

"It will not happen again. This is the last race without the podium," he told the media afterwards. "I think it's just one race - and then in Canada, we crush them."

Speaking to Sky Italia, he added: "It was our worst performance of the season. Something didn't work, but I don't know what it is now. We will figure it out once we go back to the factory.

"Even on a tough weekend, we still got more points than Ferrari, so it was still a positive race.  We lost some points to Mercedes, but we hope to do better than them in Canada. We will have some updates in Canada and Silverstone, so I'm not worried."

2023 Spanish Grand Prix results:

Winner: Max Verstappen - Red Bull Racing
Second Place: Lewis Hamilton - Mercedes
Third Place: George Russell - Mercedes
