United States v Turkiye

United States head coach Mauricio Pochettino will be under scrutiny as his team prepares to host Turkiye for an International Friendly at the Pratt & Whitney Stadium in East Hartford on the evening of Saturday 7 June, 2025. Kick-off is at 19:30.

The USA come into the match on the back of a disappointing showing at the CONCACAF Nations League, losing to Panama and Canada in March, and they will go on to face Switzerland, before competing in the CONCACAF Gold Cup through the remainder of June and potentially into July.

With the Stars and Stripes set to be one of the host teams for next year’s FIFA World Cup, Pochettino and his team need to start building momentum for the higher standard of play that will be demanded by the global tournament.

“We are not here to try to be nice, and to play nice soccer," Pochettino said. "And, well, we want to win. And then, if you don’t win, always you need to feel the pressure from the fans, of course, and from the media.”

Pochettino will be without key men Christian Pulisic and Weston McKennie, and will thus lean on the likes of Tyler Adams, Matt Turner, Tim Ream and Brenden Aaronson.

Turkiye come into this match on a high, having secured promotion to League A of the UEFA Nations League with 3-1 and 3-0 wins over Hungary back in March.

The Crescent-Stars head coach, Vincenzo Montella, says he is eager to see how his team copes with this friendly against USA (and a subsequent match against Mexico) with the ambition of returning to North America for the World Cup in a year’s time.

“We were invited from the other side of the world. It makes us proud,” said the Italian tactician. “We will go there and try to do our best. We will start with small steps within the framework of preparation.”

In head-to-head stats, United States and Turkiye have met in four previous matches, dating back as far as 1991. The Stars and Stripes have claimed two wins compared to one for the Crescent-Stars, while one game has been drawn.

The teams’ most recent meeting was an International Friendly in New Jersey in 2014 which USA won 2-1 thanks to goals from Fabian Johnson and Clint Dempsey.
