How Many African Teams Qualified for the 2026 World Cup?
The Confederation of African Football (CAF) has 10 African countries at the World Cup, a remarkable milestone for Africa to have this high number of representations at the World Cup. In the previous edition and format of 32 countries, Africa was allocated only five places, the number has doubled in this new era of competition that has nine places for CAF and one inter-continental qualification. The new and expanded format has 12 groups of four teams with 104 games in three states: Mexico, Canada and the United States.

The Nine African Teams That Qualified Directly
Morocco
Morocco will be high in confidence heading into their third consecutive World Cup in 2026 and a seventh appearance at the global showpiece. The Atlas Lions had a historic campaign at the Qatar 2022 World Cup by reaching the semi-finals, securing a fourth-place finish.
Senegal
Senegal came out at the top of Group B undefeated in their world cup qualifiers. The Lions of Teranga finished the group with 24 points, winning seven of their ten games played, and drawing the other three. Their best run at the World Cup was in 2002 reaching the last eight. Senegal is headed to a third successive World Cup.
Egypt
Egypt is showing up for a fourth time at the World Cup despite missing out on the 2022 tournament. The Pharaohs gained qualification ahead of Burkina Faso, Sierra Leone, Guinea-Bissau, Ethiopia and Djibouti after emerging from their group unbeaten in their quest for their first on football’s biggest stage.
Algeria
Algeria is back at the world stage for the first time since Brazil 2014. The year they reached the Round of 16 and took on Germany right to the brink in extra time. Algeria were winners of their group qualifiers with only one defeat, a 2-1 loss at home to Guinea on 6 June 2024, one draw and eight victories.
Tunisia
Tunisia collected 28 of a possible 30 points in their qualifiers to book their seventh ticket to the World Cup 2026 in North America and third in a row. The Eagles of Carthage have qualified for a record five out of the seven World Cups in the 21st century. The North African team will be looking make history by going past the group stage for the first time at this tournament.
Côte d’Ivoire
The Lions of Teranga are making a comeback to the global stage following a 12-year absence, they lost out in the 2018 and 2022 qualifiers. Senegal finished off in group F without defeat, they won seven games and three draws on their way to qualification. The 2024 CAF Africa Cup of Nations champions will be looking for a place in the knockout phase, a target they’ve missed in their last three attempts since their debut in 2006.
Ghana
This is Ghana’s second successive qualification for the World Cup and a fifth appearance overall (2006, 2010, 2014 and 2022). The Black Stars will be looking to make it to the knockout rounds on football's biggest stage. The Ghanaians most recent success was reaching the quarterfinals in South Africa’s 2010 showpiece.
South Africa
South Africa is back on the global stage after missing out on the three previous tournaments, qualifying for the first time since 2010 when they were hosts. Bafana Bafana punched their ticket to the World Cup on the last match day of Qualifiers by finishing first with five wins, three draws and two defeats. They wrestled with heavyweights Nigeria and a tough Benin in their last days, including a 3-0 victorious finale at home against Rwanda to get a spot in the World Cup.
Cape Verde
Cape Verde are debutants at the 2026 World Cup, a historic milestone for the Island based nation situated in the central Atlantic Ocean. Their CAF qualification campaign includes a record of five wins on home ground without conceding goals.t The team has key players like Ryan Mendes who is the captain, goalkeeper Vozinha (Josimar Dias) and defender Roberto Lopes.
How DR Congo Became Africa’s Tenth World Cup Team
DR Congo left it late for a spot at the global showpiece after failing to qualify directly through CAF preliminary rounds. The Leopards finished second in Group B qualifiers, two points behind group winners Senegal, leaving their World Cup dreams to the World Cup Play-Off Tournament. After brushing aside Cameroon and Nigeria in the inter-confederation fixtures, Senegal grabbed a 1-0 triumph against Jamaica on 31 March 2026 to go to North America.
