As one of golf’s most decorated players of his generation, Rory McIlroy will hope for a successful defence of the PGA Players’ Championship during a testing time of the year.
What to know about Rory Mcllroy
Now 36, McIlroy is currently ranked second in the official world golf ranking as he continues to be one of the game’s leading players.
McIlroy turned professional in 2007 and has since accumulated 29 wins on the PGA Tour and 20 victories on the European Tour, including single crowns on the Asian and PGA Tour of Australasia.
Among some of Mcllroy’s most notable wins, the Northen Ireland star won the 2025 Masters Tournament, as well as the PGA Championship in 2012 and 2014. In 2012, Mcllory reached the number one spot in world rankings at 22 for the first time in his career after claiming the Honda Classic and thus became the second youngest man to do so behind Tiger Woods who claimed top spot at the age of 21.
The reigning Players’ Championship winner is also a three-time PGA Tour Player of the Year, and he has won the European Tour Player of the Year on four occasions.

Reflecting on the upcoming tournament, McIlroy revealed that he is nursing a back injury and will compete without playing a practice round. After pulling out of the Arnold Palmer Invitational, McIlroy said he is undergoing treatment in South Florida days before the spectacle at Ponte Vedra.
“The back is being a bit more stubborn than we thought,” McIlroy said.
“So I’m staying at home today and tomorrow to continue treatment in South Florida with the hope to travel to Ponte Vedra on Wednesday at some point.”
