Shining Moments of the Ghana Black Stars

The Black Stars are a team that have shown bravery and skill in every soccer game they’ve competed in. From friendly matches against England, to the heights of the World Cup Quarter Finals, we’re taking a look at some of the most memorable moments for Ghana and African football.

5. England vs. Ghana at Wembley Stadium

The Black Stars took on England shortly after exiting the World Cup and their determination showed. Were it not for an incredible effort by the English players, the Black Stars would’ve seized a tremendous victory. The game ended in a 1:1 draw but the celebrations of the Black Stars and their fans could convince you that they indeed won the game.

4. Ghana v Brazil at Craven Cottage

Another exciting moment for the Black Stars and all their fans was when they played against Brazil at Craven Cottage. Even though Brazil won by scoring the only goal in the second half of the game, it was considered incredibly difficult for the Brazilians who couldn’t have imagined such stiff opposition in Africa.

3. Ghana vs Egypt in Kumasi

As part of the World Cup qualifiers in 2014, Ghana was set to play against Egypt at home in Kumasi. It was here that the Black Stars utterly thrashed the opposition with a resounding 6-1 score line. This was an embarrassing result for Egypt, being a 3-time African Cup of Nations winning team. The Black Stars were too lethal and strong on attack and the 6 goals they scored were beyond anyone’s expectation.

2. World Cup Quarter Finals 2010

While the memory may still spark anger for some, Ghana’s achievement in reaching the Quarter-Finals of the 2010 World Cup should be fondly remembered for the skill the team showed in the face of tough opposition. Luis Suarez hand ball and the subsequent missed Black Star penalty should not overshadow the fact that Ghana almost became the first ever African team to reach a Semi-Finals and their international ranking rose to 7th due to their performance in the tournament.

1. World Cup 2006

Ghana’s first appearance in the World Cup will go down in Black Stars history. For years previously Ghana had narrowly missed qualification, but finally, along with 5 other African countries, they headed to Germany. It was during this World Cup that Ghana remained as the only African team to reach the second round. It’s also important to remember that the 2006 Black Stars were the youngest team at the World Cup – averaging only 23 years old.
