The battle for Europa League football looks set to go down to the wire as Celta Vigo prepare for the visit of Rayo Vallecano to Balaidos in the penultimate round of the
La Liga season on Sunday, May 18.
Both teams have seen their chances of qualifying for the UEFA Champions League slip away after a disappointing run of results in April and they are now jostling for places in the Europa League.
The Sky Blues picked up only their second win in five outings when they beat Sevilla 3-2 on May 10, while Rayo arrested a four-game winless run with back-to-back 1-0 victories over Getafe on May 2 and Las Palmas on May 9.
Inigo Perez's side ran out 2-1 victors in the reverse fixture at Vallecas on January 10, which was their first success against Celta in four matches.
Draws has been a common theme between the two teams, who have shared the spoils five times in their last 10 top-flight meetings, with four of those producing no goals at all.
Celta head coach Claudio Giraldez is refusing to look any further than their next game in the race for European football and has called for a calm approach from his players.
"There's still a lot to play for. We face three challenging matches, two of which are against direct rivals," Giraldez said.
"We must approach this step by step. Rushing ahead often leads to mistakes. Today, after going 1-0 up and playing well, we collectively eased off a bit."
