Athletic Bilbao will chase a third win in four La Liga matches when they welcome Valencia to San Mames Stadium on Sunday, 10 May 2026, kick-off at 14:15.
Athletic claimed a second win in the space of three matches when they defeated Alaves 4-2 away from home in a Basque derby clash last Saturday – a result which left them in eighth place on the log, three points off sixth (currently held by Celta Vigo) which will likely earn passage into the UEFA Europa League.
The win over Alaves was manager Ernesto Valverde’s 500th in charge of Los Leones, though he will be departing at the end of the season. His replacement will be Edin Terzic, formerly of Borussia Dortmund.
Valencia, after a 2-0 defeat at home to Atletico Madrid last weekend, have managed just one victory from their last five La Liga outings, leaving them in 12th place on 39 points. That is just three points above the relegation zone, with Los Che needing a couple more positive results before the end of the season to ensure they remain clear of danger.
“My message hasn’t changed. I said that 39 points wouldn’t be enough,” explained Valencia manager Carlos Corberan. “I’m not changing my tune now. I wish we had played a better game today that would have allowed us to get more points, but 39 points aren’t going to be enough. We have to get more points.”
In head-to-head stats, Athletic and Valencia have met in 199 matches across all competitions. Los Che have claimed 76 wins compared to 74 for Los Leones, while 49 games have been drawn.
The teams last met in a Copa del Rey quarterfinal in February, with Athletic winning 2-1 away at the Mestalla Stadium thanks to an own goal from Umar Sadiq and a late strike from Inaki Williams.
