Aleix Espargaro will be determined to register his second win of the season by clinching the Australian Grand Prix.

The Aprilia rider has won just one race this season, which was the Argentine MotoGP on April 3, but he is still in the battle for the MotoGP world title.

Espargaro endured a disappointing race at the most recent event in the current term which was the Thailand MotoGP on October 2 - finishing 11th.

The 33-year-old claimed 11th having had to serve a long-lap penalty for colliding with KTM’s Brad Binder on the opening tour and he accepted the penalty dished out to him.

The Thailand MotoGP was won by Miguel Oliveira with the Ducati duo of Jack Miller and Francesco Bagnaia finishing second and third respectively.

However, Yamaha rider Fabio Quartararo remains at the top of the 2022 riders' standings and he is followed by Bagnaia with three races left in the current campaign.

Espargaro is placed third on the standings and he will climb to the standings if he wins the Australian MotoGP with Quartararo and Bagnaia failing to finish in the top 12 spots in the race.

“I accepted it [the penalty against me] and after that, I tried my best and managed to recover some positions and got some decent points," Espargaro said after the Thailand MotoGP.

“The championship is riding until the end but it is still 20 points with three more races so we have some chances.

"I’m happy we are still alive in the final part of the championship and I will try again at Phillip Island and Malaysia, which are very good circuits for me.”

Ducati are placed at the top of the Constructors' championship standings and they are followed by Aprilia and Yamaha respectively.
