Day 5 of the 2017 French Open is headlined by a tricky clash for top seed in the Men’s Singles, Andy Murray, as well as former champion Stan Wawrinka taking to Court Philippe-Chatrier.
Murray has been struggling for form and fitness in 2017 but came through a testing Round 1 match against Russian Andrey Kuznetsov in four sets on Tuesday. The Scot will now face up to Slovakian Martin Klizan in the second match slated for Court Suzanne-Lenglen.
Murray and Klizan have met just once before, facing each other on the hard courts of Vienna in 2016. The Scot won in three sets and is expecting another tricky match against an opponent who has both powerful ground strokes and an unpredictable shot array.
Stan Wawrinka, one of the favourites for the Men’s Singles title, also faces a tough match when he battles Alexandr Dolgopolov. ‘Stan the man’ has lost three of his four matches against the Ukrainian, though he did come out on top in the pair’s only previous Grand Slam meeting, a round of 32 match in the US Open of 2012.
Other major names in action today include charismatic but unpredictable French favourite Gael Monfils, his veteran compatriot Richard Gasquet, Women’s Singles second and third seeds Karolina Pliskova and Simona Halep, as well as a Japanese Men’s Singles hopeful Kei Nishikori.
