Roland Garros Preview : Rafa On Course For Tenth Title

2017 French Open

Roland Garros, Paris

Day 4 of the 2017 French Open sees the start of Round 2 matches, including tournament favourite Rafael Nadal taking to Court Philippe-Chatrier. The Spaniard, who is chasing a record extending 10th title at Roland Garros, will play the penultimate match on the main court today when he faces Dutchman Robin Haase.

The pair have met in just two previous matches and Nadal was winner in both: 6-3 6-2 in Doha on a hard court in 2016 and 5-7 6-2 3-6 6-0 6-3 on the grass of Wimbledon in 2010. This will be their first meeting on clay and Nadal is expected to ease into the next round without too much trouble. French fans will be hoping home favourite Jo-Wilfried Tsonga can come through his suspended match with Renzo Olivo. The unseeded Argentine leads two sets to one and 5-4 in the fourth, with the match set to resume on Court Philippe-Chatrier once the opening clash between Venus Williams and Kurumi Nara is completed.

The main court will also play host to Women’s Singles reigning champion Garbine Muguruza, who will play her Round 2 match against Anett Kontaveit of Estonia, as well as Men’s Singles 16th-seed Lucas Pouille of France, who will face Brazilian Thomaz Bellucci. The other big name on show today is defending Men’s Singles champion Novak Djokovic, who will be second up on Suzanne-Lenglen against unseeded Portuguese Joao Sousa. The Serbian has won all three of the players’ previous matches, including a French Open clash back in 2014 which ended 6-1 6-2 6-4.
