Matchday 8

21-22 November 2020

Sassuolo will look to continue their strong start to the Italian top flight campaign when they face hosts Hellas Verona at Stadio Marc'Antonio Bentegodi on Sunday 22 November 2020, kick-off at 16:00. The match is one of 10 spread over 21-22 November as part of Matchday 8 in the 2020-21 Serie A season.

Verona extended their unbeaten run across all competitions to five matches when they held log leaders Milan 2-2 away from home on November 8. Despite this strong run of form, manager Ivan Juric believes his team still has much to learn.

“We had a great first half, but at a certain stage after the break we just fell away physically and couldn’t keep up with Milan,” he explained. “We did what I wanted for 65 minutes, then the lack of character and confidence emerged, as we didn’t win a challenge or keep the ball. Even with that, they are genuinely surprising me this season.”

Sassuolo, meanwhile, are unbeaten in seven straight Serie A matches, though they will have been somewhat disappointed with a goalless stalemate at home to Udinese before the international break.

“Every game is different and I do have regrets, because we didn’t have as many scoring opportunities as usual,” said manager Roberto Di Zerbi. “At the same time, I am happy because we put in a mature performance, avoided any dangerous counter-attacks and allowed Udinese practically nothing dangerous.

“We will encounter more fixtures like this in future and we must have the same attitude, working on the details, because we did have a tendency to dominate games and lose them on the counter-attack.”

In head-to-head stats, Verona and Sassuolo have met in 18 matches across all competitions since 2007. The Neroverdi have claimed eight wins compared to seven for the Gialloblu, while three games have been drawn.

Sassuolo took four points from their league matches with Verona last season, winning 1-0 away in October 2019 before a 3-3 draw in the return game in June 2020 which saw two goals from the Neroverdi's Jeremie Boga.
