Aleix Espargaro will be determined to keep his hopes of winning the 2022 MotoGP world title alive by winning the Japanese Grand Prix.

The Aprilia rider struggled in the last Japanese MotoGP race two years ago as he finished 15th having started ninth on the grid in Motegi.

Espargaro produced an improved performance at the most recent race of the 2022 season which was the Aragon MotoGP as he finished third on September 18.

After staying behind KTM's Brad Binder for a long time, Espargaro launched his attack on the penultimate lap, then defended third place all the way to the chequered flag.

Ducati rider Enea Bastianini won the Aragon MotoGP and his teammate Francesco Bagania, who has been in great form in the last few months, finished second.

Yamaha's Fabio Quartararo, who was forced to retire from the Aragon MotoGP, is placed at the top of the 2022 riders' standings and he is followed by Bagnaia.

Third-placed Espargaro will move to the top of the standings if he wins the Japanese MotoGP and his rivals Quartararo, and Bagnaia fail to record points this weekend.

"What a race! It was not a simple weekend. Pressure was high before we even arrived here and maybe that had an influence on me," Espargaro said after the Aragon MotoGP.

"I had to rebuild my confidence lap after lap but in the end, in the race, despite not having the pace to win, I achieved the best possible result.

"After what happened to Fabio, the championship is clearly more wide open than ever. There are riders who are faster than me right now but they are in a position where they have to win, whereas for us a good result is already a great satisfaction, so we’ll try our best and have fun all the way to the end."

Ducati are placed at the top of the Constructors' championship standings and they are followed by Aprilia and Yamaha respectively.
