2022/23 UEFA Nations League

League A - Group 3
Matchday 5

Germany v Hungary

Germany and Hungary will battle it out for top spot in Group 3 when they lock horns at the Red Bull Arena on matchday 5 of the UEFA Nations League on Friday, September 24.

The Magyars currently lead the group by one point ahead of the Mannschaft after four games, although Italy are also in the mix on five points.

Hansi Flick's side recorded their first win in the competition when they thrashed the Azzurri 5-2 in Monchengladbach last time out to remain unbeaten after three successive 1-1 draws prior to that.

National team veterans Mats Hummels and Mario Gotze failed to make the cut yet again for the September fixtures, but Flick insists the duo still have a chance to earn a spot in his World Cup squad.

"Everyone still has a chance to jump on the World Cup train," he said in an interview with DFB. "BVB delivered a great performance and defended superbly for 80 minutes. I especially liked Mats Hummels. He is in very good form and looks absolutely fit."

Commenting on new Eintracht Frankfurt signing Gotze, Flick added: "We're watching what he's doing, which is really good. He seems very mature and is very important for Frankfurt."

Hungary halted a two-game winless run with a shock 4-0 hammering of England in Wolverhampton on matchday 4 to remain in pole position.

Marco Rossi's team are the surprise package of the UEFA Nations League, having only lost one of their opening four encounters in arguably the toughest group.

After this month's two fixtures, the Magyars will sign off the year against Luxembourg and Greece in November, and Rossi has welcomed the friendlies as a chance to have a look at some of the players from the Under-21's.

"Our team is able to spend such little time together each year, since the club calendar is so busy both domestically and in European competition, so every extra day spent together is of particular importance," he told the Hungarian Football Federation's official website.

"From this point of view, the unity in November will also be important, and it will provide an excellent opportunity to take a look at those young players who have been knocking on the door of the full men's team for some time - if they continue to work and perform properly, they can soon be regular members of the squad.

"We want to see what they are capable of and where they are internationally when playing against other adult national teams."

Head-to-Head record:

Matches - 36
Germany - 13
Hungary - 11
Draws - 12
