2022/23 English Premier League

Matchday 7

Liverpool v Wolverhampton Wanderers

Anfield
Liverpool, England
Saturday, 10 September 2022
Kick-off is at 14h00

Liverpool will target a return to winning ways in the Premier League when they host Wolves at Anfield on Saturday, September 10.

Jurgen Klopp's side are on the up after a disappointing start to the campaign, when they dropped seven points from their opening three games.

The Reds thrashed newly-promoted Bournemouth 9-0 then beat Newcastle 2-1 courtesy of a 98th-minute winner from Fabio Carvalho before being held to a 0-0 draw by Everton last weekend.

Klopp expressed his surprise that the Merseyside derby ended goalless, given the amount of chances both teams created, although Alisson and opposite number Jordan Pickford delivered outstanding performances.

"Rule number one, if you cannot win the derby - don't lose it. The amount of chances we had and they had, I'm surprised there wasn't a winner," the German said.

"We had the last chance, which was a massive one, but Ali had to make two incredible saves. It was intense like always, and we were ready to fight after a super game on Wednesday.

"We had to dig deep. They scored a goal - I didn't see it back but I think it probably was offside. Ali made an excellent save. I think we hit the post three times and there were a few unbelievable saves from Pickford - wow, what can you do?

"In this game, easy and free-flowing is not possible. A 0-0 draw sounds strange, but that's it."

Wolves picked up their first win of the season at the weekend as Daniel Podence's 45th-minute goal saw them edge Southampton 1-0 at Molineux.

Bruno Lage's troops are now unbeaten in their last three outings following back-to-back draws against the Magpies (1-1) and the Cherries (0-0) prior to that.

The Black Country club have collected six points from their first six matches to sit 14th in the standings, two points above the relegation zone.

Lage was pleased that their performance finally brought the desired result, having seen his players do well in their previous five outings but not getting rewarded for their efforts.

"We are happy with both situations; with the performance and with the result," the Portuguese tactician said. "First-half, we did very good, we scored our goal and we had one or two chances to score more goals.

"Second-half, it was a little bit balanced. Southampton are very hard to play and they come away with everything, every time, the aerial duels, but we were brave and we took good chances in good transitions.

"So I'm happy with the performance and happy with three points. In the end, we just need to bring the result."
