Top spot in Group E will be up for grabs when Ghana take on the Central African Republic in their final 2023 Africa Cup of Nations qualifier at the Baba Yara Sports Stadium on Thursday, September 7.

The Black Stars are sitting in pole position after collecting nine points from their opening five matches and they've yet to taste defeat in the qualifying campaign.

Chris Hughton's side are back on home soil, having drawn their last two games away to Angola (1-1) and Madagascar (0-0), while also playing out to a 1-1 stalemate with the Wild Beasts in the reverse fixture on matchday 2.

Their only win in 2023 came against the Black Sable Antelopes (1-0) on March 23 and Hughton wants to qualify for the African showpiece in style by picking up maximum points in Kumasi.

"Our strategy for the next match is to win. We are playing at home. We know we have to get the result and obviously it's a game we know the consequences if we don't win," he said.

"We will be going into another difficult game against Central African Republic and we have to win."

Central African Republic could still finish top of the group as they trail Ghana by just two points in third place, although it would require Angola slipping up against already-eliminated Madagascar.

Raoul Savoy's side beat Barea both home and away to keep alive their hopes of reaching the AFCON finals before suffering a 2-1 defeat to the Black Sable Antelopes on June 17.

Savoy believes he is starting to see the fruits of his labour after working for two years to build a team and foster a sense of unity with his young players.

"We are working hard for about two years now and step by step we are getting a good team," he said. "We are working hard, step by step with young ones.

"Some players are playing in other African countries so we have people coming from everywhere and we are trying to bring them together and to be one."
