2025-26 Spanish La Liga

Matchday 5

Valencia v Athletic Bilbao

Estadio de Mestalla

Valencia, Spain

Saturday, 20 September 2025

Kick-off is at 19h00

Athletic Bilbao will be looking to get their La Liga campaign back on track when they visit Valencia at the Mestalla on Saturday, September 20 in the late kick-off.

The Lions went into the international break on a high after winning their opening three games of the season to keep pace with league leaders Real Madrid.

However, Ernesto Valverde's side saw their perfect record come to an end with a narrow 1-0 defeat to Alaves on September 13.

The Basque outfit have slipped to fourth place, one point behind Espanyol (3rd) and Barcelona (2nd), with Los Blancos a further two points clear at the league summit.

Los Ches will be smarting after they suffered a humiliating 6-0 loss at the hands of Barcelona on September 14, having gone into the international break on the back of a 3-0 win over Getafe.

It was their first victory of the new campaign after Carlos Corberan's side opened proceedings with a 1-1 draw against Real Sociedad before going down 1-0 to Osasuna.

Valverde, who guided his team to a 1-0 triumph over Valencia in the corresponding fixture last term, has revealed his main focus this term is doing well in La Liga as Athletic prepare to face Arsenal in the UEFA Champions League in midweek.

"It's (the Champions League) not something we're worried about, it's something we have to live with and compete for," the Spaniard told Marca.

"Winning La Liga is very difficult, but winning the Champions League for us, I don't even know what it can be. Our primary objective is La Liga, and then we'll compete at our best in the rest.

"La Liga is what tells you how you're doing, and today we weren't that good (against Alaves). On Tuesday we played a contender to win the Champions League, and we're newcomers to the competition. And these three points against Alaves won't come back."
