Ducati Lenovo Team's Francesco Bagnaia will be looking to become only the fourth rider to win back-to-back
Catalan Grand Prix on Sunday, September 7.
Only Mick Doohan (1997, 1998), Jorge Lorenzo (2012, 2013) and Valentino Rossi (2001, 2002, 2004, 2005, 2006) have claimed successive victories in Barcelona.
Bagnaia won the race for the first time in 2024, one of his 11 P1s, although he missed out on a third consecutive world championship after finishing 10 points behind Jorge Martin in second place.
The Italian only has one victory to his name this season after capitalising on Marc Marquez's crash to come out on top in the Grand Prix of the Americas, but he's claimed another six podium finishes.
Bagnaia is massive 227 points behind championship leader Marquez in third position. However, the Spaniard's bother, Alex, has only picked up eight points from the last three races to open the door for 'Pecco' in the chase to finish runner-up.
The 28-year-old closed the gap on the younger Marquez to 52 points after getting P9 in the Hungarian Grand Prix on August 24.
Bagnaia has struggled to get to grips with the Desmosedici GP25, while team-mate Marquez has thrived on the new bike and he admits it's been hard not maintaining his high standards.
"Since 2023, when I was told Marc was coming to Ducati, and since 2024, when I learned he was joining the factory team, I always said I could only learn from him," the two-time former world champion said.
"I always experienced it that way. What have I learned? That he beats me.
"I usually manage to do better in the second part of the season, but this year the situation is a little different... what I'm having the hardest time accepting is not being at my level."
