Sport's Greatest Comebacks

Although it's no fun to see your favorite sports team fall behind, one of the most exciting things that can happen is when the luck starts to change and your team makes an unbelievable comeback. As great as some have been over the years, these are the most incredible comebacks ever witnessed in sports.

Buffalo Bills

Sometimes a game is so epic it earns a nickname, so fans can easily reference it for the rest of time. When a game becomes known simply as "The Comeback," you know exactly what it must be famous for. On January 3, 1993, during the AFC Wild Card game, the Buffalo Bills were on at home playing the Houston Oilers and they were losing by a large margin. It wasn’t until a rousing, albeit harsh, halftime talk did the Bills comeback with an amazing 28 points in the third quarter and another 7 in the fourth to take the game.

Liverpool FC

Liverpool FC's Champions League Final win over AC Milan on May 25, 2005, would go down as the "Miracle of Istanbul." After a devastating first half, AC Milan went 3-0 up and the odds were reflecting a 100-1 chance of a Liverpool comeback. Ten minutes into the second half, Liverpool scored and they would score another two times in 6 minutes. This left the score at 3-3 in full time, which eventually went to penalties where Liverpool would triumph 3-2 in the shootout.

Patriots

The New England Patriots comeback against the Atlanta Falcons in Super Bowl LI goes down as one of the greatest comebacks of all time. Everyone was either rooting for the Patriots or watching in horror as they did the impossible. At halftime it seemed that the Patriots, who had won the Super Bowl four times in the past 15 years, were headed for a big loss. The Falcons led 21-3 before the Patriots clawed back 25 points to make it 28-28 at the end of the fourth quarter. A touchdown in overtime sealed it, and the nation was in shock.

The Cavaliers

The 2016 NBA finale was a rematch between the Warriors and the Cleveland Cavaliers. Over the years, Cleveland teams had lost big games named "The Drive," "The Fumble," and Michael Jordan's "The Shot", which had all crushed their dreams. And now they were down 3-1 to the Warriors in Game 4 and no team in Finals history had ever overcome that kind of deficit.

But the Cavaliers mounted a comeback to win Games 5 and 6 in "convincing fashion." At the end of the third quarter in Game 7 the Warriors were barely ahead. A nail-biting fourth quarter saw Lebron injure his wrist, but in the end the Cavaliers won 93-89, putting them in the record books.

Henri Cochet

Not so much one comeback as three, as Cochet recovered from falling two sets down in the quarter finals, Semi-finals and Final of the 1927 Wimbledon Gentlemen’s Singles. But it was his quarter final performance against the American Bill Tilden that is best remembered. Tilden led 5-1 in the third, only for Cochet to fight back to win 2-6, 4-6, 7-5, 6-4, 6-3. Famed referee FR Burrow later said it was the most remarkable game he ever witnessed.

Botham’s Ashes

The pivotal Test in "Botham's Ashes" remains unmatched as one of the greatest sporting comebacks of all time. The odds of an English victory were 500-1 against midway through their second innings. These odds were so attractive that even Rod Marsh and Dennis Lilee couldn't resist a punt. Of course, this was before Ian Botham would reach 149 not out to set a stable score while Bob Willis wrapped up the bowling with an incredible 8/43 to pull off the win.

Lasse Viren

Viren’s chances of winning 10,000m gold at the Munich Games looked to be over when he was involved in a collision with Tunisia’s Mohamed Gammoudi around 5,000m into the race. Both men fell to the track and Gammoudi would quickly pull out injured. But Viren continued, after calmly taking a moment to compose himself. Re-focused and re-energised, he hunted down Great Britain’s David Bedford, on his way to one of two historic golds at the Games.

Angola v Mali

One of the biggest capitulations in the history of international football. Host nation Angola were 4-0 up with little over ten minutes remaining of the first game of the 2010 AFCON. Ten minutes later and Mali had scored 4 goals to snatch a point back in one of the most unbelievable defensive failures in football.
“Football in Africa is learning on the road, we have the skills but we were a little naïve,” said Angola coach Manuel Jose.

With odds like 100-1 and 500-1 on some of these comebacks, make sure you don’t miss out betting on the next big one with Betway online sports betting.
