The Top 5 Players in the NBA this season

The 2019-20 National Basketball Association (NBA) season has been put indefinitely on hold due to the Coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic which has spread across most of the globe.

At the time of the NBA's decision to suspended the league for the foreseeable future, the Milwaukee Bucks and LA Lakers sit atop the Eastern and Western Conference respectively.

Here follows Betway's top-five candidates for the Kia NBA Most Valuable Player (MVP) award - as things stand:

Giannis Antetokounmpo

Giannis-Antetokounmpo

The reigning NBA MVP is on course to defend the crown he won last season.

The 'Greek Freak' has averaged more points and rebounds per game on less minutes this season and has played an integral role in the Bucks' 53-12 record, which is the best record in the NBA.

Antetokounmpo leads the NBA in points per 100 team possessions, field goals per 100 team possessions, efficiency  and his average of 29.6 points on just 30.9 minutes a game is the third best in the league. He is also sits third with 13.7 rebounds a game, behind only Andre Drummond and Hassan Whiteside.

At just 25 years of age, it is scary to think what he can still achieve over the next few seasons.

LeBron James

LeBron James

Arguably the greatest player of all time, James has bounced back from his toughest season in the NBA to lead the Lakers to the top of the Western Conference standings on a 49-14 record at the time of writing.

Many had written off the now 35-year-old heading into the current season after the team he was playing for failed to make the playoffs for the first time in more than a decade, but the acquisition of Anthony Davis and complementary role players has resurrected the Lakers and nailed the franchise down as one of the favourites to win the Larry O'Brien this year.

James has transformed his game to not necessarily be the primary scorer on any given night, but rather the primary distributor and that reflects on the stats sheet where he averages a league record and career high 10.6 assists per game.

James Harden

James Harden

One of the most prolific scorers in NBA history, Harden leads the league on 34.4 points per game for the Houston Rockets.

The 30-year-old who narrowly missed out on a second MVP title last year, is enjoying his second best scoring season (on average) to date.

Harden has also made the most three pointers (271), averages the seventh most steals, ninth most assists and is only second to Antetokounmpo on efficiency rating.

Luka Doncic

Luka Doncic

The reigning Kia Rookie of the Year has taken his game to a whole new level this season and such has been his progress, that he has drawn comparisons to the aforementioned and legendary Lebron James.

Doncic has enjoyed an unprecedented season for a player so young and at only 21 years of age, his best is still to come.

The Dallas Mavericks star is fifth on efficiency rating, fourth on 8.7 assists per game, sixth on 28.7 points per game and having beaten Micheal Jordan's record of the most consecutive games with at least 20 points, 5 rebounds and 5 assists earlier this season, he is already easily considered on of the best players in the league.

Kawhi Leonard

Kawhi Leonard

The reigning Kia NBA Finals MVP has averaged a career high 26.9 points this season, while he has also averaged a career high on assists and rebounds in his first season with the Los Angeles Clippers.

While load management has become a synonymous term with Leonard, when on the court, he is one of - if not the best - two way players in the league and an opposition coach's worst nightmare.

Notable mentions: Anthony Davis, Bradley Beal, Damian Lillard, Trae Young and Russel Westbrook.
