Istanbul was the venue of arguably the greatest night in Liverpool’s European history back in 2005 when they came from three goals down at half-time to eventually beat AC Milan on penalties to lift the European Cup. They return to the city on Wednesday looking to add another piece of European silverware to their trophy cabinet.

Liverpool’s last appearance in the Super Cup, as a result of that 2005 success, saw the Reds overcome CSKA Moscow in Monaco, 3-1 after extra time, courtesy of a Djibril Cisse double. Jurgen Klopp’s men began their domestic campaign in fine fashion, easing past newly promoted Norwich City 4-1 with last season’s Golden Boot winner Mohamed Salah amongst the scorers.

Chelsea will be looking to lift their first-ever UEFA Super Cup after they suffered back-to-back defeats at this stage in 2012 and 2013, to Atletico Madrid and Bayern Munich respectively. Frank Lampard will be taking charge of just his second ever match at the helm of the Blues – replacing Maurizio Sarri in the summer after the Italian guided the West-London club to Europa League glory and his maiden trophy as a manager.

There is also a massive Eden Hazard shaped hole in the middle of the park that, judging by their 4-0 opening day defeat to Manchester United at Old Trafford in the Premier League on Sunday, needs to be quickly filled.

The pair have previously played each other on 182 occasions with Liverpool edging their rivals in terms of wins having notched up 78 in that period compared to Chelsea’s 63. There have been 41 draws, including six in just the last 12 matches between them with the most recent of those coming in their first league meeting of last season when former Blues frontman Daniel Sturridge rescued a point for the visitors with a late wonder strike as Liverpool came away from Stamford Bridge with a 1-1 draw.
