UFC Fight Night: Woodley v Burns

Sunday 31 May 2020

The Ultimate Fighting Championship will make a return to its spiritual home of Las Vegas, Nevada, with the staging of UFC Fight Night: Woodley v Burns at the UFC APEX Facility on Sunday 31 May 2020.

This will be the fourth UFC event staged since the outbreak of the coronavirus pandemic, and like its three predecessors in Jacksonville, Florida in recent weeks, will be held behind closed doors.

The main card is headlined by a Welterweight clash between Tyron Woodley and Gilbert Burns, with the latter stepping up to a UFC main event match for the first time in his career, following a run of five straight wins – the most recent of which was a TKO of Demian Maia as recently as March.

Woodley, meanwhile, has not been in action since March 2019 when he was comprehensively outfought by Kamaru Usman and lost the Welterweight Championship. Bouncing back from that defeat will foremost in the 38-year-old’s mind.

“My goal is to just go out there and viciously remind everybody what I’m capable of. I’m just ready to go to dark places. When you get to me at this point, all the guys I really knocked out is the mentality I have,” said Woodley.

“It’s not a lot of pressure on me to go out there and be the greatest. That is because I am the greatest! There’s a lot of pressure on him. He’s the one that’s been taking all that Sh**. He’s the one that’s opened up his mouth. Don’t let your mouth write cheques that your a** can’t cash.”

The co-main event sees Heavyweights Blagoy Ivanov and Augusto Sakai go to war in the Octagon. Bulgarian Ivanov has had mixed results since his move to UFC two years ago and he will be looking to recover from a split decision loss to Derrick Lewis from November 2019, while Sakai is looking to continue his rise up the division rankings and improve on an impressive professional MMA record of 14-1-1.

The remainder of the main card features Kevin Holland v Daniel Rodriguez and Roosevelt Roberts v Brok Weaver in the Welterweight and Lightweight divisions respectively, while a Women’s Strawweight match pits Mackenzie Dern against Hannah Cifers.

The preliminary card is headlined by a Women’s Flyweight clash between Katlyn Chookagian and Antonina Shevchenko. The former took on Valentina Shevchenko (Antonina’s younger sister) in her last fight in February and was defeated via TKO in the third round with the Women’s Flyweight Championship on the line – she’ll be hoping for revenge, albeit against a sibling of her vanquisher.
