Osaka out to retain US Open title

Naomi Osaka will be looking to become the first female player to successfully defend the US Open women's singles title since Serena Williams in 2014.
 
The Japanese superstar remains among the elite tennis female players on the planet and she is currently placed third on the Women's Tennis Association (WTA) rankings.
 
Osaka, who turned professional in 2011 at the age of 16, has won the US Open women's singles title twice in 2018 and 2020. 
 
To date, Osaka is a four-time Grand Slam singles champion and she is the reigning champion at the US Open and the Australian Open.

Her seven titles on the WTA Tour also include two at the Premier Mandatory level thanks to her aggressive playing style with a powerful serve that can reach 201 kilometers per hour (125 mph).
 
The 23-year-old took part in the 2021 Western & Southern Open where she was defeated by Jil Teichmann in the third round, both in three sets.
 
Before competing at the 2020 Tokyo Olympic Games in her home country Japan where she lost in the third round of the games 6-1, 6-4 to eventual finalist and silver medalist Marketa Vondrousova.

The USA-based player knows she has to bring her A-game when she competes at the USTA Billie Jean King National Tennis Center.
 
"I know there are a lot of things I need to fix within my game," Osaka said.
 
"So in a weird way I'm kind of glad that I lost, because there are so many things that I want to fix before New York. 
 
"I feel like my level is not that far off… if I want to keep being more positive with myself, I need to think about the things that I could improve on. There are definitely a lot of things."
