Naomi Osaka will begin her quest for a first French Open title when she faces WTA 47th-ranked Laura Siegemund in the first round on 26 May.

What to know about Osaka

The Japanese star is a four-time Grand Slam champion (US Open 2018 & 2020, Australian Open 2019 & 2021) and former world No. 1.

Currently seeded No. 16, Osaka has never reached the second week of the French Open.

Why Osaka could win the French Open

Osaka possesses one of the most powerful serves and forehands in the women’s game, weapons that have become increasingly effective on clay.

With improved movement and confidence on the surface, the 28-year-old will be determined to break her French Open curse and chase a fifth major title.

What was said

“I feel like the clay season this year, it’s been a little bit hard to judge for me. I felt like I was playing well in Madrid, but then obviously I played [Aryna] Sabalenka and I lost there… I felt like I had my chances, which was a good takeaway," Osaka said ahead of the 2026 French Open.

“Then we went into Rome… I thought I played my first two matches really well, and then Iga [Świątek] said, ‘Hell, no!’ She slapped me in the ground. That was a little crazy. Honestly, that blew my confidence a lot, but I just had to step away, knowing that she’s the best clay court player, and I still have a lot to learn.

“I talked with my coach Tomasz (Wiktorowski), and he said it’s crazy I have only been to the third round here. Hopefully we can go further this year.”

Head-to-Head

Naomi Osaka leads Laura Siegemund 2-0 in their previous meetings (both on hard courts).

However, this first-round match at the 2026 French Open will be their first meeting on clay (H2H: 2-0).
