2018 was a record year for money earned across a range of different sports across the world. Today we’re taking a look at the individuals who earned the most in their respective sports last year.


10. Matthew Stafford

Total earnings: $59,5 million

Starting at number 10, Stafford signed a five-year deal worth a total of $135 million that included a massive signing bonus. The NFL player is also in partnership with various different brands like Nike, PepsiCo, Ford Motors amongst others.


9. Matt Ryan

Total earnings: $67,3 million

Ryan became the NFL's first $30 million player per year when he signed with the Falcons last year. His deal set new records for average salary This American football player also has endorsements with Nike, Delta Airlines, Gatorade, IBM, Mercedes Benz and Banana Republic.

8. Steph Curry

Total earnings: $76,9 million

Curry signed a historic $200 million contract with the Warriors last year, which effectively tripled his salary in the past season. He also has endorsements with brands like Under Armour, Vivo and Nissan.


7. Roger Federer

Total earnings: $77 million 

The amount of prize money that Federer has earned throughout his career is dwarfed by the amount he makes through sponsorships and endorsements. He has deals with Lindt, Mercedes Benz and Barilla, along with sponsorships with brands like Nike, Credit Suisse and Moet & Chandon.  
 

6. LeBron James

Total earnings: $85,5 million

LeBron James notably makes much of his money through endorsements and other companies that he has vested interests in. He collaborates with Nike, Coca-Cola, Beats by Dre, Kia Motors, etc. He is also an investor in Blaze Pizza and owns a production company called SpringHill Entertainment. He also owns a 2% stake in the EPL club Liverpool.

5. Neymar

PSG’s record $600 million signing of Neymar see’s the Brazilian continue to earn the previously agreed salary total of $350 million which will run until June 2022. This firmly puts Neymar on this list, and his additional earnings come from a range of sponsorships with Nike, Red Bull, Gillette, McDonald’s and Beats by Dre.
 

4. Conor McGregor

Total earnings: $99 million

Earning roughly $85 million for his boxing match against Floyd Mayweather, Conor McGregor makes the number 4 spot on this list. He also has a range of partners including Burger King, Beats by Dre and Monster Energy.

3. Cristiano Ronaldo

Ronaldo’s current earnings at Juventus are around three times higher than any other player in Italian football. Barcelona and Messi signed an contract extension through 2020-2021 that will see him make $80 million annually, plus bonuses. This deal will make Messi the highest paid footballer in the world. Couple this with his deals with Gatorade, Huawei, Pepsi, Ooredoo and Hawkers to a total of $111 million.

Mayweather holds the top spot for the fourth time in his career. In his bout vs. Conor McGregor, Mayweather earned an estimated $300 million, which rocketed his earnings to $1 billion, putting him on the level of Michael Jordan and Tiger Woods.
