The Clarets head into the midweek fixture on the back of a 2-0 loss away to Chelsea which ended their winning streak at two matches. Burnley defeated Liverpool and then Aston Villa to ease their relegation fears, before slumping to defeat at Stamford Bridge.

City edged past bottom of the table Sheffield United 1-0 to move three points clear atop the league standings. Victory, Pep Guardiola's 500th as a manager, extended their unbeaten run to 12 matches.

"It was so difficult. We knew it would be," said Guardola in the aftermath of their win at Etihad Stadium on Saturday.

"It was amazing after this run of 12 wins in a row (across all competitions), still the players run and fight like animals. We conceded one chance at the end. Sheffield United are a difficult opponent. Every time we play them we struggle.

"We struggle because they are a very good side. They are alive, you can feel it. They shout, they talk, they stick together until the end."

Riyad Mahrez scored a hat-trick in a 5-0 win for the Cityzens over Burnley at Etihad Stadium earlier this season. Victory for City ignited their current unbeaten run in the league and also extended their winning run in this fixture to seven matches across all competitions.

Mahrez was also on target in a 4-1 win for City at Turf Moor last season.
