Keepers who could win the Cup

The World Cup is fast approaching and it’s time we took a break from famous forwards and goal scorers to focus on, arguably, the most crucial position in any defense. The keeper.

There are many incredible goalkeepers that will be travelling to Russia this year. While past World Cups have seen some incredible displays by Buffon and Neuer (and some equally horrible displays by Rob Green), we’ve decided to pick out our favourites for 2018.

Jordan Pickford, England

Although he’s one of the more inexperienced keepers of the lot when it comes to the international scene, Pickford’s performance in the Premier League has assured him of his ticket to Russia. He will be England’s youngest ever goalkeeper at the tournament, but this doesn’t mean that he isn’t a safe bet for Gareth Southgate’s team.

Ederson Moraes, Brazil

As part of this years’ incredible Manchester City squad, Ederson has maintained an 88 passing accuracy and 14 clean sheets. His performance in the Premier League isn’t everything though, he’ll be set against Roma’s Alisson who is providing stiff competition as Brazil’s first choice keeper.

Marc Andre Ter Stegen, Germany

Neuer’s struggles with injury and lack of game time means that we’re likely to see the Barcelona star Ter Stegen take his place at the World Cup. Ter Stegen’s quick reflexes and shot-stopping ability make him a strong case for the role as Germany’s no. 1.

Thibaut Courtois, Belgium

Chelsea’s gloveman has been in great form this season and Belgium are hoping that he can carry that form to Russia. He’s intimidating in one-on-one situations and, along with the incredibly strong squad Belgium have fielded in recent times, will be key for them to break away from being the Dark Horse of the tournament.

David De Gea

Looking to repeat their 2010 triumph, De Gea and Spain will have to be at the top of their games going into this World Cup. De Gea has established himself as one of the world’s best keepers over the last few years and is leading the way for the Golden Glove this season. His outstanding abilities and reflexes will be sorely needed if La Roja is to triumph.
